The SA Provincial Championship was first played in 1889 but the first time a trophy was presented was in 1892 after the current trophy had been donated by Sir Donald Currie. The Vodacom Cheetahs and the Lions have met on just one previous occasion in the domestic season’s showpiece fixture.
That was in 1994 when a dominant Lions (then Transvaal) recorded a 56-33 win over the Cheetahs at the Springbok Park Cricket Ground. At the time Vodacom Park was being built in anticipation of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The 56 points scored by the Lions remains a record for a final and the match aggregate of 89 points is also a finals record.
