WOULD the Wallabies beat the Bulls?
Funny the random thoughts that occur while watching a thrilling, if one-sided Super 14 final but, as heretical as this question might seem, it's hardly baseless. Do a quick jersey switch, and the entire Bulls line-up wouldn't look out of place in Springbok green and indeed most of them will be making precisely that transition very soon.
But what most impressed about the Bulls is the very same thing that causes most concern about the Wallabies - the number of strike weapons they have. Across the park, the South Africans boast players who can hurt the opposition, some quickly such as winger Bryan Habana, halfback Fourie du Preez and number eight Pierre Spies, some slowly and painfully, such as locks Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield and metronomic five-eighth Morne Steyn.
As for the Wallabies, they have the axis of entertainment, Matt Giteau and James O'Connor, a rampaging Rocky Elsom once he becomes a wolf again after casting off his Baa-Baas clothing, and Stirling Mortlock, somewhat one-dimensional these days but still a hard, hard man to contain.
