Default SCRU wary of risks of hosting Super 14 games

Timaru will not be lining up to host a Highlanders Super 14 match.

Tomorrow night the Highlanders take on the table-topping Bulls in the unlikely setting of Palmerston North.

It will be the first time in Super rugby's 14-year history that a team have played a home game outside their region.

The Otago franchise has struggled to attract crowds and has openly admitted it made financial sense to accept the Manawatu Rugby Union's offer to host the game.

South Canterbury Rugby Union chairman Stephen McFarlane, however, poured cold water on the idea of Alpine Energy Stadium hosting the Highlanders. "It is very unlikely that we will host a full Super 14 game again.
