If the Scottish Rugby officials and a cabal of Borders clubs get their way, Saturday’s Scottish Hydro Electric Cup finals day could be the last one. Not that the proposal got anything in the way of support from the eight teams in action, on the day.
“It is huge for us,” Jamie Murray, captain of the winning Melrose side who had just come through their final against Heriot’s 31-24, said. “The last time we had our hands on a trophy was 1997, when I was just a nipper on the bus watching the likes of Bryan Redpath and Craig Chalmers.
“If you are out of the league it can be hard, but if you are still in the cup that means there is another important competition you can win and that keeps things going.
“On top of that, it lets sides from other divisions have a pop at you and that can only be a good thing. There will be upsets, and that is good for the game.
