Default Time for Italy to shine: Mallett

Nick Mallett believes the time has come for Italy to become a force in the Six Nations Championship.

The new coach of the Azzurri takes over a side that won two games in last year's tournament and nearly reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

And the English-born coach says all the ingredients are there for the team to succeed.

"I go into the Six Nations expecting to win every game," he said on Friday. "I want my team to show courage, determination, heart and pride in every game.

"If we stay close to our opponents late in the game there's no reason why we don't have a chance to win. We will need the support of our fans."

Italy opens its campaign against Ireland on February 2 in Dublin before meeting World Cup finalist England in Rome eight days later.

The clash against Ireland will mark the debut of Stade Francais' Sergio Parisse as captain of the national team having taken over the role from Marco Bortolami.

The Azzurri will have to do without Gloucester lock Bortolami for the opening two games.

Bortolami is unavailable through an eye injury but should return to play against Wales on February 23 at the Millennium Stadium.

Mallett took over from Pierre Berbizier after the World Cup and immediately set about examining the infrastructure of the game in the country.

And he was left in no doubt from his tour of Italian clubs that the country is going about things in the right way.

"From what I have seen so far, I have been very impressed by the coaching in Italy and by the enthusiasm shown by the players," he said.

Meanwhile, Italy Rugby Federation president Giancarlo Dondi is confident that under Mallett, the Azzurri will succeed.

"I am optimistic that we will have a great tournament," said Dondi. "We will only host two games in Italy but I am hoping that the team will show fighting spirit in every game.

"We want to continue to show that we are improving year by year and to be able to compete with the best teams."

Default O'Sullivan keeps faith with Ireland

Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan has kept faith with his World Cup flops for the Six Nations opener against Italy.

O'Sullivan has named a 22-man squad for the Croke Park showdown that includes 14 survivors from the team smashed 30-15 by Argentina in September.

Among the new faces are highly-rated Leinster No.8 Jamie Heaslip, who has won three caps, and his provincial colleague Bernard Jackman.

An update on Paul O'Connell's back injury is expected soon - surgery would force him to miss the entire Six Nations - so Donncha O'Callaghan and Malcolm O'Kelly are the first choice locks.

O'Sullivan will remain loyal to the players that misfired so spectacularly at the World Cup for as long as possible.

To an extent the Ireland coach is caught between a rock and a hard place, weighing up the pressing need to uncover the next generation of Test players with the win-at-all-costs approach essential if he is to keep his job.

A poor performance in the Six Nations would conclude O'Sullivan's six-year reign as Ireland boss and the 49-year-old is under immense pressure.

The precarious nature of his position is no more apparent than in the Irish Rugby Football Union's decision to delay making the new appointments of team manager, backs coach and sports psychologist until after the tournament.

Mindful that a new head coach might want different personalities on his management team, the IRFU is waiting to see how the Six Nations unfolds before acting.

But O'Sullivan is confident his first choice Ireland team remains a force to be reckoned with as he fights to restore his battered reputation.

"It's not rocket science to see where it went wrong at the World Cup," he said.

"We didn't play enough rugby in the build-up to the tournament and we were in a difficult group which we struggled to get out of.

"But we didn't become a bad rugby team overnight. The Six Nations is an opportunity to prove that."

Predictions:

Ireland 20-24 Wales
Scotland 16-27 England
France 40-18 Italy

Not too sure about the Ireland v Wales sore to be honest... It depends how Ireland play as Wales are on form.

What does anyone else think?
