Default Brumbies' sour taste

BRUMBIES chief executive Andrew Fagan said he would be concerned if the Western Force made a secret payment to an alleged assault victim as a sweetener to lure Matt Henjak to the Perth-based Super 14 club.

As revealed in The Sydney Morning Herald yesterday, the Force paid between $15,000 and $20,000 to a South African national who claimed Henjak had assaulted him during a Brumbies tour of the country in 2004. It's understood the alleged victim initially demanded a six-figure payment in return for dropping civil charges.

Henjak was playing for the Brumbies at the time but signed with the Force the following year. Fagan believed Henjak's primary motive for leaving the Brumbies was the opportunity to earn a starting Super 14 berth in Perth after playing understudy to George Gregan. However, he was concerned any payment could have been used as a sweetener to seal the deal.
