Default Kicking/penalty Question

I recently was watching Rugby and there was a penalty after a kick from mid-field which crossed the 22 meter line and went out of bounds. It was not a penalty kick. The announcer commented that the player had kicked the ball too far. Was that the penalty?

Another quick question. I often see phases noted at the top of the screen such as 5th phase or 7th phase. What is that?

Your input is appreciated.

Firstly, did the ball not bounce and go out at the side of the pitch, or bounce and go out the end of the pitch. If it's the former then it would be a line out in line from where it was kicked, if it was the latter then it would be a scrum where it was kicked.

And phases are how many times the ball's been recycled. So if someone has the ball, gets tackled and recycles a ball through a ruck they would then be in the second phase.

Hope I helped, Rhys

Thanks for getting back to me. The ball did not bounce and went out the side of the pitch. There was a line out from the point where it was kicked. I did not know it had to bounce. So thanks for clearing that up as well as the phases.

If the ball had continued to roll into the try area at the end of the pitch what happens if the defense runs ahead of the offense and kicks the ball through the end of the pitch to prevent the offense from falling on the ball for a try? Is that a penalty and who gets the ball?

It only has to bounce if the kick is made from outside the player's own 22.

And if the ball had stopped in between the try line and the dead ball line and the defending team kicked it out then it would be a 22 drop out to the defending team.

If it is a kick in general play from outside the 22, the ball must bounce before it goes into touch or else it is a lineout to the defending team from where it was kicked. If it is kicked from inside the 22, it doesn't matter if the ball bounces out or is kicked directly out, the lineout is given to the defensive side where the ball goes out.

Default reply to kicking/penalty question

The only thing that i can think of is that some of the players where in front of the kicker when he kicked the ball and because the ball went directly into touch there were no advantage for the deffending team.

The phases thing is the total of rucks and malls that there where during the phase of play up to where there was a turnover or a stop in the play. so if there were 7 phases there were 7 rucks or malls.

So i hope that helps you
