Thailand offers to host Asian Women's Rugby Sevens
Thailand's male rugby players have yet to make an impression internationally but the country's women are continuing to hog the limelight.
Though they lost in their bid to earn honours in their World Cup assault in Dubai in February, they bounced back in Hong Kong at the Women's Rugby Sevens by winning the Plate competition.
They were beaten by China and Thai Rugby Union general secretary Adisak Hemyoo, who managed the team, said this was because the Chinese outshone the Thais with their outstanding physique.

Team's bonding improves
For the past few years, when the calendar flips to April, it has become a weekly ritual to meet early in the morning to condition, but more importantly, to strengthen the team bond.
At 6:45 a.m. last Friday, 35 members of the Penn State women's rugby team showed up in the rain to sprint up and down the hills of the Bryce Jordan Center to remind them this time of year is special.
With only a few weeks left to achieve the goal of winning a national championship, the Lady Ruggers push themselves by doing something they wouldn't usually do any other time of the year.
"Rugby is a team sport, you can't move forward without you teammates," fifth-year senior Alison Worman said. "The April push solidifies belief in each other and belief in yourself."

Tackle, ruck, maul: They're having a ball
Want to get in shape? Meet people? Relieve stress, try something new and have fun?
Then rugby just might be for you. Find out more at an informational meeting tomorrow for the Rappahannock Rugby Club, a local team recruiting members for the summer sevens season.
Women's team president Ness Sufrin, a teacher, said she played as a child, then again in college, and missed rugby when she moved to Fredericksburg.
"It's a good chance to be active and play a competitive sport," she said. "I was teaching some of the kids at school to play, and watching them got me itching to play again."
Mary Pilger had a similar story. She played rugby at the University of Mary Washington for three years and was disappointed when she graduated and was left with no team.
"There's something about rugby that makes you really bond," she said. "Maybe because you play so closely together physically.
Rugby is a precursor to American football, but is a very different game.

India embraces women's rugby
At their first press conference, the players are curious and amused with all the media attention, but also excited about leaving for Thailand.
Sangeeta Minz smiles shyly if you ask her about how she started playing.
It's been only a month since she played her first game and she has already made it to India's first women's rugby team.
Sangeeta, 20, is a kabaddi (a South Asian team sport) player from Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, and is thrilled about her selection to represent India at the Asian Women's Rugby Sevens tournament to be held in Thailand on 30 and 31 May.
Rugby India, the organisation that promotes the sport in the country, recently held a national competition to find talent for the tournament

Gulf women win Asian Plate
Arabian Gulf won the Asian Women's Sevens Championship Plate courtesy of a stunning comeback win over Guam in the finals in Pattaya.
Jen Thompson and Sandra Ahrendt scored a try either side of the break as a resurgent Arabian Gulf won 12-7, despite trailing first-timers Guam 7-5 at halftime.
Julie Smith converted once and missed one conversion. Thompson scored her try in the last minute of the match to give the Arabian Gulf women, who had blanked Hong Kong 34-0 in the semis, a well-deserved victory.

USA Women's rugby drops close game to Canada on controversial call
A controversial call near the end of the match between the USA Women’s “A” side and Rugby Canada’s “A” side may have cost the USA a test match victory Tuesday evening at Glendale’s Infinity Park.
A downpour during the first fifteen minutes softened the field making ball control difficult, and neither team was able to find a rhythm. Although unable to score in the first forty minutes, the Eagles held the Canadian women to a single try (converted), but seven minutes into the second half, Hannah Stolba broke through the Canadian defense for the USA’s only try (converted) of the evening.
