Default Gerrard criticises ARU over contracts

MELBOURNE - Wallaby back Mark Gerrard has criticised the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) after claiming he was offered inferior terms to extend his contract beyond 2007.
Just two days after winger Lote Tuqiri signed a five-year contract reportedly worth A$5 million ($5.7 million) to remain with the ARU, Gerrard said he and fellow back Clyde Rathbone were disappointed by the ARU's approach to contract negotiations.
"They came up with budgetary excuses," the Brumbies winger said.
"Me and Clyde have spoken about it. It's disappointing.
"I thought my form was going well the last couple of years. When you get a downgrade in your contract, it's a cross against your name."
The 24-year-old has played 18 times for the Wallabies after making his debut against Italy in Melbourne in 2005, but fears the downgraded contract may force him to play overseas.
"It's annoying. I'm only 24 and I've got a young family. I'd love to stay in Australia.

"I'm working hard to get the contract back up to where it should be. I'd like to get it sorted out as soon as possible.
"The ARU's main goal (has been) re-signing Lote Tuqiri. I'll just have to sit back and enjoy the saga and try to play some good footy."
ARU rugby manager Pat Wilson said contract negotiations were ongoing and defended the high price paid for retaining Tuqiri.
"We've made an offer to Lote in line with his standing in the game which hasn't compromised what we do in our broader contracting environment, and those negotiations and discussions continue," Wilson said.
He said every player had the right to look into playing abroad which, under current rules, would prevent selection from all Wallaby squads.
