Yank needs help
Finally I am able to watch some Rugby in the States. Now that I can see games for the first time - I hope I can learn a lot. I will use primarily books and just watching, but I hope you can bear a question now and then.
I guess my biggest area of confusion has to do with what takes place immediately after a tackle. I know the ball carrier must release the ball. Is it then available to anyone who gets to it first? Is offside in effect at this time? Also, just how much holding, pushing, and general contact may take place while going for the ball?
Ok, how about the scrum? First, why would the official not put the ball into play rather than a player? It certainly appears to me that the player tends to favor his side. Lastly, who may take the ball from the scrum? Must it be the scrum-back or any on-side player on his feet?
I will no doubt have other questions, but I will try not to bother too much. Great game - but I don’t get much support from Yanks who think American football is the “tough” game. I have been in a few debates. First in American ball the player wears about 50 pounds of protection. I will continue that battle. Thanks for any help.
