Default Going to college. looking to play

Hi, i live in Colorado and this spring ill be headed off to my first year of college and they have a rugby team(club sport here) and id love to play but im somewhat concerned about my size/level of fitness. I'm 5'11 190lbs. i figure giving weight lifting "maxes" arent really worth anything because rugby seems to be more about muscular endurance that just 1 explosive move. so for pushups(just tried :P ) i can do 75, i can do 45 squats just with my body weight of course, and only 30 situps. 7 pullups. i suck at running right now but i think theres a problem with my feet that i need to get checked out because i dont really get tired after 1 mile, but the bottom of my feet hurt so much i generally stop. ive never been a good runner and im not really fast.

what should i work on? should i bulk up to try to be a forward or slim down and work on my running to be a back?

i know these are like...super noob questions but i dont know where to start. rugby isnt exactly popular in the US so i figured id ask around on some forums. any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey Gus,

Glad to here you're getting into Rugby! Let's start with your size first. You weigh about 13 stone at the moment, which, for your height, probably won't work too well as a prop unless you play at hooker. I reckon you'd be best suited in the backs then, look at Brian O'Driscoll, he's your height but weighs another 2 stone [210lbs], most of that is lean muscle. I suggest that when you get to college you begin a decent weights program at your gym and also work on your cardio. If you're training with a team they should have a strength and conditioning coach in place, or at least have a set program working. If you sort out your nutrition and get lots of protein you should notice a difference pretty soon. If you want to put on more weight you can use a supplement that contains both protein and creatine. I don't need to bulk up so I just take protein bars/shakes and I use maximuscle. Protein is important and in order to get enough of it before a work out you usually need to take a supplement, otherwise it means eating quite a large meal before working out [4 egg's, breast of grilled chicken, etc], which some people simply can't do or afford. So they're my tips. Remember, when you're lifting weights, start off light. There's a very macho attitude in gyms in the free weight's section about how much you can bench, etc. Don't mind them. You'll only injure yourself if you try to lift too much too soon. Anymore questions, just ask!

Remember though, I'm no pro, I'm just telling you my advice from my own experience etc. Consult a professional too!

so do you think it would be a good idea to just wait until the beginning of next year rather than trying to start halfway through the season? Ive been told that i could join at any point, its just a matter of understanding whats going on and getting play time. should i just work on my fitness between now and august? I know at the beginning of the season they teach skills because a lot of new people go out for the team that have never played before.

it seems like waiting is the smarter thing to do but i cant help wanting to play right away! if i buy a ball, are there any drills i can do by myself?

Well if you can start half way through the season it would be good to get some experience and improve your fitness. You could also learn the in's and out's of the game. One of the most difficult things is getting used to the rules, especially if you don't grow up with the game, so I suggest watching quite a bit online or if you can get it on TV. The rules are constantly changing too...
