THE Border women’s rugby side will have a mountain to climb when they play their inter-provincial semi-final in Port Elizabeth later this month.
This follows their 24-10 loss to Eastern Province at the Victoria Ground in King William’s Town on Saturday.
Border are third on the log with 13 points while EP are second on 15, and a win for Border would have handed them a home semi-final.
Border had the upper hand in ball possession. Most penalties also went their way but they failed to capitalise on them. The key to the visitors’ victory lay in scrumhalf Saloma Booyens and flyhalf Zenay Jordaan. Jordaan’s boot found touch accurately while Booyens created two of the three Eastern Province tries. The visitors led 10-0 at half-time through a try and conversion by fullback Zandile Njoko, who also booted a penalty.
Border suffered a major setback in the second half when coach Mvuyisi Sigila was forced to substitute key players due to injuries, while crucial errors saw the game being taken away from them. An attempted clearance by centre Veliswa Moyakhe let Daphne Scheepers in for a converted try but Border hit back through hooker Nonkosi Sobandla from a lineout.
Jordaan’s converted try from a counter-attack sealed the game for Eastern Province.
Border prop Portia Jonga had an outstanding all-round game in defence, as did lock Nolusindiso Booi in the lineouts.
Better be careful, these two teams are like dogs going at each other. Well they were last time i saw em play.Maybe if we are lucky enough we'll see WWIII
