Last week, the Collegiate Times published an excerpt from a blog post in which one writer expressed her newfound respect for the sport of rugby.
Ordinarily, I could not have been happier to read such an article. I believe that rugby is one of the most misunderstood and underrated sports in this country, and any recognition or appreciation it receives is a triumph for ruggers everywhere. The writer of the blog asserts that the Virginia Tech Rugby team deserves more support, and I could not agree more. It would be a tremendous oversight, however, to call attention to the under-recognition of one club sport without mentioning the club sports system as a whole.
Most people fail to realize that, considering some support and resources from the recreational sports department, club sports are almost entirely student-run. Clubs are in charge of much of their own fundraising, as well as recruiting, finding coaches and purchasing uniforms. They also manage their own game schedules, which includes everything from finding teams to play, tournaments to enter, referees to officiate, to making travel arrangements for vehicles, lodging and food.
