Default Super 14 and Rugby Union

This is my first full year of watching Super 14 Rugby. They don't seem to follow Rugby Union Laws. They give free kicks rather than penalties and it changes the whole complexion of the game. Also, they are very loose in interpreting whatever rules they observe. As a result it seems a lot more chaotic than British or French Union Rugby. Just my initial reaction after viewing this past season.

That southern hemi rugby for you. The new ELV's they adopted state that anything other than offsides, dangerous play, or not entering through the gates are considered free kicks. The southern hemisphere strives for a very free flowing and fast game. You can get away with a lot more. Fun rugby.

Apparently. Also, I question whether or not an official who has called nothing but Super 14 games all year can really do a good job when it comes to full Union Rugby in the Six Nations or Summer Tours. They are so much more lenient when it comes to calls. They don't seem to take charge of the game like a Nigel Owens.

That is something the players must account for during the match. Every game is called different, and it will always be that way. However, all the rule changes from region to region make it very difficult for say a Mark Lawrence to ref in the northern hemi. I for one think the southern refs call the game more to my liking as I like to play a very fast flowing match.
