Default Scrum put-in side

The IRB rule book states "The Scrum Half must throw the ball in from the side of the scrum first chosen." (Rule 20.5 (a)) I interpret this to mean that once the scrum half has lined up to put the ball in, he can't run around the scrum and put in on the other side. Recently, in a 7's match, the ref penalized us for putting in on two different sides in two separate scrums. He said that once you choose a side you must put in from the same side for the rest of the match.

Could someone please help me interpret this rule? Can you choose a put-in side for each scrum or can you choose only once?

Thanks

The ref was wrong. You CAN choose a different side everytime, as long as you establish the put in side before scrum packs down. You can not quickly run to other side and put in haha. Whatever side you go to when scrum is binding, must be the put in side. I love doing this when playing number 9. The other half-back will complain to no end.

Surely the ball should be fet from the most comfortable side for the hooker, which will remain the same every time.

Yes it most likely would be put in the left side (most comfortable side for hooker). I play with a hooker that can hook on either side. Really just to piss other 2/9 off.

Haha, nice! I played hooker for a bit and always much preferred the left but then I moved to loose head to avoid all the problems...
