THREE SIX Nations seasons with only three wins leaves Scotland with no option but to replace Frank Hadden when the 2009 campaign is reviewed at Murrayfield over the next few weeks.
The timing is crucial; the man in the post for 2010, for continuity’s sake, has to take the team to the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
The state of Scottish rugby is also crucial, as the game needs a filip to rebuild support and ticket sales.
Empty seats in test matches this season against New Zealand, South Africa and Italy were, while discouraging, nothing new. The struggle to sell out the Six Nations clash with Wales certainly was, and is clear evidence that Hadden’s record of progress isn’t impressing fans.
Even if he could present a record of wins that showed Scotland were making some of this progress he so often quotes, then there would rightly still be a discussion about whether he should continue, simply on the grounds of whether he has been in the job long enough.
