Cambridge half-backs sign short term contracts with London Irish
London Irish today (5th March) announced the signing of the Cambridge University half-backs Ross Blake and Ross Broadfoot on short term contracts.
Paul Hodgson's call-up to the England squad and the current injury crisis affecting the club's half-back resources forced the Exiles to seek additional cover for the foreseeable future.
Ross Blake and Ross Broadfoot started at scrum half and fly half respectively for Cambridge University in last December's Varsity Match at Twickenham. 28-year-old Blake captained the Light Blues to victory over Oxford.
Blake was born in Glasgow and previously played at scrum half for Bristol and Bath before deciding to study Economics at Cambridge. He has represented Scotland at Under 21 level.
Sunbury is familiar territory for Ross Broadfoot. The 23-year-old fly half spent two years in the London Irish Academy before leaving to join Leicester in 2004. He played for England at Under 19 and Under 21 levels, including the IRB Under 19 World Cup in 2004.
Confirming the signings London Irish Director of Rugby, Brian Smith said, "The combination of Paul Hodgson's deserved England call-up and the injuries to Shane Geraghty, Eoghan Hickey and Peter Richards meant that we had only one fit half-back pairing available for this weekend's game. Ross Blake and Ross Broadfoot are an experienced, proven combination and we've been fortunate to sign them."
