Sydney Roosters marquee signing Willie Mason has abandoned his ambitions to pursue a boxing career for at least a year.
The decision by Mason not to box will raise some eye brows as one of the 'official' reasons for his fallout with Canterbury was their decision to refuse Mason permission to fight when under contract.
Mason signed with the Roosters where they agreed to allow Mason to box.
Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes not long after Mason's departure hinted that Mason's departure could have been engineered for him to end up at the Roosters - if he was a cynic.
Former Canterbury legend and cult hero Geoff Robinson said, "I find it a strange one. Maybe the Roosters got in his ear. But it will be disappointing to the Canterbury people. Willie said he wanted to box and Canterbury let him go because of that. Now he doesn't want to box.
"I sometimes think Willie doesn't know what he wants. If he knew what he wanted I think he'd be a better player," added Robinson who played in three grand finals for the Bulldogs during the clubs successful 1980's era and was the favourite amongst the Bulldogs faithful.
