Default Wigan Confirm George Carmont Signing

Wigan Warriors yesterday announced the signing of Samoan International centre, George Carmont (29), on a two year deal.

Carmont joins Wigan after spending three years with the Newcastle Knights club in Australia making 60 NRL appearances. He is a strong defensive centre with an excellent try scoring ratio.

George captained Samoa in 2006 and recently helped them to gain the final place in the 2008 World Cup Finals in Australia playing alongside Wigan Warriors player Harrison Hansen, in the win against the USA and in the Samoa versus Lebanon final qualifier.

New Wigan owner, Ian Lenagan, said:

"We are delighted to have filled our vacant centre slot with a player such as George Carmont who has played consistently well for the past 3 years in the NRL. His try-scoring ability and excellent defensive qualities add value and strength to our back line without breaking the bank.

"Brian Noble and Joe Lydon worked hard behind the scenes to secure George's services and the deal was signed after Samoa booked their place in the World Cup Finals."

George Carmont said,

"This is a great opportunity for me to join one of the biggest names in world rugby. I really enjoyed my time at the Newcastle Knights and would like to thank the Club and their fantastic fans for their support.

"I am excited about the prospect of playing in England and joining this wonderful club with its great tradition and history. I have spoken to some of the Super League players in the Samoan squad and, in particular Harrison Hansen, and I am really looking forward to joining Wigan Warriors."

Carmont has returned to Australia for a well-earned rest with his family after the Samoan World Cup Qualifiers but will join the rest of the Wigan players for pre-season training between Christmas and the New Year.

Speaking about the signing Head Coach Brian Noble added,

"I know George well and I am delighted to have signed a player of his quality. He has been excellent in the NRL for the last couple of years and is a good addition to the Wigan squad."
