The 43-year-old former Warrington loose forward had been suffering from a form of motor neurone disease and had been confined to a wheelchair for 12 months.
The illness forced Gregory to leave his job as Wigan coach in 2004.
During a distinguished playing career, Gregory captained Warrington and Great Britain, including on a tour to New Zealand, and won 20 Lions caps.
The Wigan-born Gregory, who leaves a widow and two sons, lost consciousness on Sunday and died on Monday.
