Bristol 17-0 Stade Francais

Bristol put in a dogged display to earn a well-deserved win over the French champions at the Memorial Ground.

Two Dave Hill penalties were the only first-half scores as poor conditions made free-flowing rugby difficult.

The second half was no easier for Stade as Bristol pegged them back in their half, denied them any attacking threat.

In the dying stages, Neil Brew and Rob Higgitt pressurised Brian Liebenberg into a mistake and combined to put Brew over in the corner for a clinching try.

Bristol started brightly, with only an unfortunately timed knock-on by David Lemi preventing them claiming the opening try after 15 minutes.

But the home front row's dominance of the scrum gave Dave Hill the chance to open the scoring, and when Sergio Parisse limped off with an unpleasant looking injury to his right ankle, the French side's problems only increased.

Mark Regan was a constant irritation to the Stade pack in the first half, but after the break the French side began to get more into the game.

They were gifted a chance to get back in the match on 50 minutes when Skrela had a straight-forward 25-yard penalty, but it drifted wide of the post.

Hill made it three penalties out of three just after the hour mark, and with time running out, the visitors visibly began to lose heart.

A combination of the conditions and tenacious Bristol tackling, particularly by Andrew Blowers on Remi Martin and Julien Arias, denied Stade's backline any chance to stretch their legs.

With eight minutes to go, Hill's attempted drop-goal was well charged down by Jerome Fillol but just when it looked like a length-of-the-field breakaway could be on the cards, he knocked on, summing up his team's afternoon.

To round off a miserable afternoon for the Paris side, in the closing minutes Liebenberg's pass was intercepted on the half-way line, and Brew and Higgitt ran to the tryline together to ensure the ball ended up touched down in the corner for a try.

Default Bristol head coach Richard Hill:

"It was probably our best result of the last five years.

"To beat the French champions rates as an outstanding achievement. Our front-row did a superb job, and our defence didn't allow Stade any time on the ball.

"We took a gamble playing against the wind in the first half, but the players worked exceptionally hard to make it difficult for Stade to come back."

Default Leicester Tigers 39-0 Edinburgh

Leicester treated new coach Marcelo Loffreda to a perfect home debut thanks to a five-try rout against Edinburgh in the Heineken Cup at Welford Road.

Andy Goode touched down for the first of his 19 points on five minutes before Tom Varndell's try 10 minutes later.

A Geordan Murphy score extended the lead just before half-time and the Tigers secured a bonus point with a penalty try just after the interval.

Martin Corry added a late try in injury time on his 250th club appearance.

The victory gave the Tigers a much-needed confidence boost after their 22-9 defeat at Leinster the previous Saturday.

Loffreda was boosted by the return of England backs Dan Hipkiss and Varndell, along with second row Marco Wentzel and tight-head prop Martin Castrogiovanni.

Default Dragons 17-45 London Irish

London Irish blitzed the Dragons at Rodney Parade to record their second successive Pool One bonus-point win.

Tomas De Vedia (2), Mike Catt and Delon Armitage secured the crucial four tries inside half-an-hour, before the shell shocked home side got a Mike Owen try.

That was little comfort as Catt and Peter Richards ran the show, Peter Hewat kicking superbly for 15 points.

Nick Kennedy and Armitage crossed after the break, against a consolation Dragons score from hooker Steve Jones.

Default Biarritz 22-21 Saracens

Saracens were denied a famous win by Dimitri Yachvili's injury-time penalty after a thrilling match in Biarritz.

Early converted tries by Kameli Ratuvou and Rodd Penney cancelled out Yachvili's opening kick and put the English side 14-9 up at the break.

After the restart, Biarritz's Samiu Vahafolau set up a counter-attack which ended with Philippe Bidabe scoring.

Andy Farrell's try in the corner seemed to have sealed victory but Yachvili's long-range effort won it.

The home fans had barely finished celebrating Yachvili's opening kick before Ratuvou took advantage of a disorganised defence to touch down in the corner.

Farrell, who was later to be the scorer, was provider for Penney with an inch-perfect chip into the corner as Saracens registered their second try, both converted by Glen Jackson.

Yachvili added two more goals in the first half but Saracens were good value for their lead, and although Biarritz added a fourth penalty, the visitors looked on the verge of stretching their lead when the home side registered their lone try.

After 10 minutes on the back foot, the French side broke away through number eight Vahafolau, who followed up his brute force charge with a fine pass to find winger Bidabe, who stretched to touch down in the corner.

Jackson slotted over his third tight-angle conversion after Farrell's try, but at the death, Yachvili was given a chance from 40 metres out and made no mistake.

Default Gloucester 26-18 Ospreys

Gloucester stretched clear at the top of Pool Two as they beat the Ospreys in a Heineken Cup cracker at Kingsholm.

The visitors had the upper hand in the first 40 minutes and scored two tries through Sonny Parker, but Ryan Lamb landed three penalties for Gloucester.

The hosts went ahead through an Anthony Allen try soon after the re-start.

James Hook edged the Ospreys back in front but James Simpson-Daniel cruised over and Chris Paterson converted and added a penalty to wrap up victory.

Gloucester handed the Ospreys an early lead after the Cherry and Whites tried a repeat of the flowing move from their own 22 which saw Mike Tindall romp over for a superb score against Ulster last week.

Default Scarlets 17-33 Wasps

Holders Wasps made a powerful Heineken Cup statement with a thumping bonus point win at Stradey Park, leaving the Scarlets facing a group-stage exit.

A woeful first half defensive display from the home side saw the outstanding Fraser Waters score two tries and help create the third for George Skivington.

The Scarlets got a Simon Easterby try and exerted early second-half pressure.

The Wasps defence held out, and Danny Cipriani and Riki Flutey completed the rout before a late Mark Jones score.
