Default Bates forgives Falcons' six-shooters

DISAPPOINTED not to take more chances, Steve Bates stopped short of bemoaning a bonus point lost.

Falcons rugby director Bates was more concerned with delighting in a sixth straight Guinness Premiership win than trifling over the extra point.

Newcastle scored two tries through Tim Visser and Tom May’s overtime special, ending Harlequins’ five-match winning streak while extending their good run.

The Falcons are now on their best run since winning the inaugural Premiership title in 1998 – and that cuts more cloth with Bates than the failure to convert every chance created at Kingston Park yesterday.

Bates said: “We could have made it a lot easier for ourselves, we created three or four good chances that we didn’t take.
