Gallop says professional sport faces substantial financial hardship if Carlton and United and Lion Nathan breweries were banned from the marketplace.
"We still need to see what is going to be proposed, but certainly removing alcohol sponsorship and advertising would have a significant financial impact on rugby league at every level," Gallop said yesterday.
"Our sponsors do a great deal of work promoting positive messages about responsible drinking. Anyone who suggests sport could simply replace their support without substantial financial hardship is mistaken."
Gallop's plea comes as the National Preventative Health Task Force, selected by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to advise the federal government, is reportedly calling for an end to all alcohol advertising connected with sport, arenas and live broadcasts.
