The Sunday Telegraph has learned Tuqiri must face a pay cut of around $700,000 a season to return to the NRL after Souths, the Bulldogs and Gold Coast conceded they could not afford the dual international.
Tuqiri's manager, Les Ross, is in the process of applying to become an NRL-accredited agent, fuelling the prospect of the Fijian flyer resurrecting his career in the 13-a-side code. But Tuqiri, whose ARU deal was worth $1million a season, will almost certainly explore his overseas options as NRL clubs baulk at his price tag.
Titans boss Michael Searle, the first NRL chief to express interest in Tuqiri in the wake of his ARU axing last month, admitted the Coast was ou t of the race unless he was prepared to accept $100,000 a season.
