England to build backroom staff

Posted 12-23-2011 at 04:45 AM by ruggerbean
England will begin their search for new coaches today, following the announcement that John Wells and Mike Ford will be leaving their posts. They were England's forwards and defence coaches respectively, but the Rugby Football Union (RFU) has decided it is time for a change.

Both Wells and Ford were coaches at the 2007 and 2011 World Cups, but following Martin Johnson's resignation as first team coach back in November, England have been looking to appoint a whole new coaching staff.

Acting RFU chief executive, Stephen Brown has thanked both men for their services to the national team, and wished them luck for the future.

He said: “John and Mike have given great service to England and their contribution is appreciated.”

Speaking of Ford's role in the England set-up, Brown added: “In his five-and-a-half years with the senior team Mike created one of the best defences in world rugby.

“While the World Cup was obviously disappointing overall, it should be noted that England conceded just three tries in their five matches - the joint lowest in the tournament.”

Ford admitted it had been a great honour to be a coach with the national side for five-and-a-half years, but said it was time for a new environment.

Wells added: “It has been a real privilege and a great honour to have been involved with the RFU for the last six years.”

I have been part of a very successful National Academy and England Saxons set-up and been to two World Cups including a World Cup final in 2007, with the victories over Australia in Marseille and France in Paris as stunning highlights with the England team.”

Meanwhile, the search for Martin Johnson's successor as England manager still goes on. Stuart Lancaster was appointed on an interim basis earlier this month, alongside scrummaging coach Graham Rowntree and Saracens first team coach Andy Farrell.

Northampton coach, Jim Mallinder was instantly placed as the bookies favourite following Johnson's November resignation. However, the fans favourite is also believed to be in the running.

Henry masterminded New Zealand's impressive World Cup victory earlier this year, and the former Wales coach has often expressed his desire to return to coaching in Britain.

For now though, he seems more likely to go over to Poker Games Online | Play Free Poker Online | PokerStars and relax with a game of poker or two!
