Small Glimmer Of Hope For Day-time Grand Final
The NRL are poised to look at the kick off time for the Grand Final next year with a small glimmer of hope that the majority of Rugby League supporters will be rewarded with a day-time kick-off.
For many years the night-time Grand Final has been a controversial issue in Rugby League with the late kick-off being a serious inconvenience to supporters outside Sydney and young families.
NRL Chief Executive David Gallop has been a big supporter of the night-time Grand Final, but has opened up the door for discussion with a decision to be made next week after consultation with the 16 clubs and of course Channel Nine.
Gallop said, "The issue of the day grand final will certainly be raised. The change to daylight saving has opened a new problem around the current kick-off time."
North Queensland Chief Executive Peter Parr was in no doubt preferring a day-time Grand Final and said, "I understand why they play it at night time given the commercial advantages it brings. I think just about all of Queensland would much prefer a day grand final."
The current Grand Final format has a supporter in Melbourne Chief Executive Brian Waldron, who said, "As a code we have a real competitive advantage with a night grand final."
Many publications including Rleague.com have been running consistent polls from 2001 to 2007 when the night-time Grand Final has been in place and on every occasion support for a return to the day-time Grand Final has been consistently over the 70% mark.
What do the readers think about a possible return to the day-time Grand Final?
